"Humbling Ourselves in the Presence of God"

Humbling Ourselves in the Presence of God

Bible Verse:
O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is Thy name in all the earth, who hast displayed Thy splendor above the heavens! Ps 8:1

My thought for today is the reverence that we give to names of God is reflected in our thoughts as we hear them proclaimed. The Jews revered the name of God so highly that they would not say His name. They could not bring themselves to writing His name down as well. They held in high esteem the glory and majesty of God.

Take a moment and review your own life. Do we revere the name of God.? Does our knee bow and tongue confess Jesus Christ as Lord to the glory of the Father whenever we hear the name of Jesus proclaimed? Our reaction to the names of God is critical to our faith journey. When we willingly humble ourselves before hearing, speaking or even reading the name Jesus Christ we have a correct view of the majesty, honor and praise that He deserves.

Make it a point today to listen for the name Jesus. Humble yourself before its recitation no matter that the one who spoke it was speaking it in vain. Allow yourself to praise God when you hear His name proclaim no matter how poorly others treat His name, you and I can revere it. We can praise Him though others may curse Him.

We can also look for the splendor and majesty of God. His handiwork is all around us. We see it in the faces of our neighbors. We see it in the sunrise and sunsets. We see it in the snow and rain, the flowers and the trees that dot our landscape. All we need to do is be attentive to what we see and then choose to humble ourselves in a moment of thanksgiving for all that He has done in and through His creation.

You and I may not change the world, but we can change ourselves. Today’s scripture is a call to submission, a call to praise God in all that we see, hear, touch and smell. God can be honored and glorified, if we choose to make it a part of our lives.

What is your attitude at the hearing or reading of the names of God? Do you cringe at other’s misuse of His name? Are you willing to honor Him while others abuse and dishonor their Creator? We are called to be a beacon shining in the darkness, therefore let’s shine when we hear His name proclaim. Let’s humbly bow as we hear His name proclaimed. In doing so we honor God and our faith is strengthened.
